Whenuakura Wildlife Sanctuary is a geographically unique and historically significant site nestled approximately 600m off the coast of Whangamatā Beach.
The unique shape of the island is a result of the ocean continually eroding softer sediment in the center. This has created a picturesque lagoon accessible via an opening in the rock and giving the island its Donut like shape.
The island can be reached by kayak or stand up paddle board from Whangamatā Beach.
